Subotica/Novi Sad, 10 June– President of the AP Vojvodina Assembly, dr Juhász Bálint, participated today in the conference titled “Beauty in Everyday Life – Women, Art and the Art of Living in the Art Nouveau Era”, held at Subotica City Hall to mark World Art Nouveau Day.
Addressing the conference participants, President Juhász emphasised that Subotica was one of the most important centres of Art Nouveau architecture in this part of Europe. He noted that the city’s uniqueness lay in the fact that its residents encountered this artistic movement every day—in its streets, squares and landmark buildings that shape the city’s identity.
He stressed that Art Nouveau was not merely an architectural heritage, but also a way of understanding the world, a part of the culture and collective memory of the region. Juhász recalled that the creators of the Art Nouveau movement left future generations not only with outstanding buildings, but also with lasting values that continue to define the appearance and spirit of Subotica today.
Speaking about the importance of preserving cultural heritage, President Juhász stated that heritage could survive only if it was cared for responsibly, restored and passed on to future generations. As he pointed out, the preservation of Subotica’s architectural heritage was not only a cultural issue but also a social one, since these buildings continued to shape the city’s identity and represent one of its most valuable resources.
He particularly welcomed the theme of this year’s conference, dedicated to women, art and lifestyle in the Art Nouveau era, noting that it offered an opportunity to view the rich heritage of this period from a new perspective.
The conference, which brought together experts in art history, architecture and cultural heritage preservation, also featured addresses by the President of the Subotica City Assembly, Danijel Đivanović and the Deputy Mayor of Subotica, Góli Csilla. The programme includes lectures on Art Nouveau stained glass, the architectural heritage of Kanjiža and Palić, as well as fashion and the position of women at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
This event is part of a three-day programme marking World Art Nouveau Day in Subotica, which includes exhibitions, guided expert tours, literary and film programmes, as well as activities for young people aimed at promoting awareness and preservation of cultural heritage.
