Novi Sad, 9 April – The President of the AP Vojvodina Assembly Mr Balint Juhász, met today with a delegation from the Office for Roma Inclusion, consisting of Acting Director Mr Željko Radu and a provincial deputy and member of the National Council of the Roma National Minority, Ms Jelena Jovanović.
The meeting was held on the occasion of World Roma Day, celebrated on 8 April, and focused on improving the position of the Roma community, with particular focus to the importance of education, employment and institutional support for inclusion.
President Juhász emphasised that World Roma Day serves not only as a reminder to discuss the advancement of the Roma community, but also to reflect on the achievements resulting from affirmative measures implemented by institutions, most notably in the field of education.
“Education and institutional support are key prerequisites for full social inclusion and equality. In this regard, the provincial administration will continue to support projects across all national communities and national councils. Preserving national identity and nurturing the mother tongue are extremely important, but it is equally vital to acquire education and skills demanded by the labour market. This directly impacts the improvement of livelihoods as well as the process of inclusion itself,” president Juhász said.
Acting Director of the Office for Roma Inclusion, Željko Radu, noted that the Roma community still faces significant challenges, but he highlighted the encouraging fact that the number of Roma students enrolling in and completing secondary and higher education
continues to grow each year.
Jelena Jovanović, member of the National Council of the Roma National Minority, emphasised that the introduction of the official use of the Romani language has been initiated in 15 villages across ten municipalities, describing it as a significant step forward.
The delegation presented president Juhász with the flag of the Roma national community, which will be displayed in the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina alongside the flags of other national communities represented by their national councils in the AP Vojvodina.
